The members are, from left, Cathy Pollachek, Susanna Selph, Barbara Teepe, Kay Parrott, Laura Manning, Pam Clements, Carolyn Ferraro, Mary Ann Polk, Becky Meyer, and Vicki Kurtz. These are four of the banners displayed on Madison Avenue in Greenwood as coordinated by the Mary Bryan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to honor military veterans. The Mary Bryan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently held its first celebration to display veteran banners on Madison Avenue north of Main Street in Greenwood. The city worked with the local DAR chapter by hanging 18 banners to be displayed for one year until Memorial Day 2024. At that time the banners would be returned to the families that ordered them. A DAR committee reached out to the VFW, American Legion, schools, libraries, friends, and families online to find those families interested in recognizing a family member that had served. The branches represented on the banners included the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Reserves that served in the Civil War, WWII, Vietnam, Gulf War / Operation Desert Storm and Global War on Terrorism. The committee consisted of Laura Manning, Cheryl Mead, Becky Meyer, and Cathy Pollachek. They coordinated all the steps involved in the banner program that was first presented to the chapter in July 2022 as a possible fund-raiser for chapter participation. The City of Greenwood provided the banner project with 22 poles with special brackets for the hanging of the banners on Madison Avenue. Since that time, marketing had placed informational order forms in racks at the VFW, American Legion, Greenwood Village, Greenwood and White River libraries. The VFW also placed a copy in their newsletter.Eighteen orders for banners were received and placed in: the city over Memorial Day weekend. The Mary Bryan Chapter DAR also honored Tha Tha Zi with its service to community scholarship. She will attend Taylor University in the fall where she will study to become a youth minister. The scholarship is awarded to a female student who is active in her church and community and demonstrates the DAR spirit of volunteerism or service. She submitted the following essay to the Mary Bryan Chapter of DAR: “Even though I am a person with many flaws, one quality that sets me apart is my willingness to go above and beyond to accomplish a goal.I was fascinated by the idea of learning from a very young age.Out of all my objectives, learning would never cease, which may explain why I adore it so much.In relation to this, I taught myself to do my nails over the summer break and launched a business from it.At the age of 17, I was already learning how to manage time, finance, and build networks.Another trait that makes me unique is that I’m independent.Growing up, I was a follower of everything my friends would do.I didn’t do anything by myself because everything was handed to me.In saying this, as I grew older, I’ve learned to break free from that attachment, to express my thoughts, and to travel a different path than my peers.Along the way, I’ve developed a stronger sense of responsibility for my family and improved my ability to communicate with an understanding heart.” |
