Four soccer teams snare sectional championships

Four soccer teams from the Southside brought home IHSAA soccer sectional championship trophies.
In Class A, Lutheran and Greenwood Christian Academy won sectionals and could square off against each other for a regional championship Saturday afternoon at Knightstown.
The Saints won their own sectional Saturday by shutting out Southwestern (Shelby County), 3-0 after advancing against Hauser, 6-0. Lutheran is unscored upon in the playoffs.
Greenwood Christian Academy won the Class A White River Valley Sectional trophy by dominating Lighthouse Christian Academy, 5-0 Saturday. The Cougars advanced by edging the hosts, 3-2.
GCA hosts Oldenburg Academy with Lutheran traveling to Covenant Christian today (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. in regional action. A possible all-Southside regional title game looms as the winners face each other for the Knightstown Regional championship Saturday at 2 p.m.
In Class 3A, Center Grove claimed the Terre Haute South Sectional trophy by dominating the host Patriots in their opening game, 6-0 and then shutting out Bloomington South, 1-0 in the championship Saturday. The Trojans square off against host Columbus North today (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. with the winner facing the Castle-Floyd Central winner Saturday at 2 p.m. for the Bloomington South Regional championship.
In Southside sectionals, Southport and Roncalli reached Class 3A championship games. The Cardinals edged township rival Perry Meridian 3-2, but then fell to Cathedral, 2-0 in the title game at Warren Central. The Royals defeated rival Franklin Central, 3-2 and then lost to sectional host Columbus North, 4-2 in the title game.
Girls sectional action found Franklin Central and Roncalli facing each other for the 3A Whiteland championship. The Flashes prevailed 4-1 Saturday. FC advanced after defeating Greenwood, 2-0 and Columbus East, 6-0. Roncalli advanced by downing Franklin, 3-0 and Whiteland, 3-1.
Franklin Central now hosts visiting Bloomington South Thursday at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Bloomington South Regional title game at 4 p.m.
At Perry Meridian, the host Falcons defeated Warren Central in their opener but fell to Cathedral, 2-0 in the title game.
At Beech Grove, the host Hornets opened by defeating Rushville, 5-3, but then Connersville downed the Hornets, 5-1 in the title game Saturday.
