Coach’s comments: “We have big shoes to fill at setter. We have two new setters, but they have been working hard and have played club ball. They are no strangers to that position. They’re not stepping into a new position; they’re just stepping into a higher level. Basically, all our offense returns up front; so, swinging at the ball, we should be okay. Our seniors have high expectations. Our newcomers will fill the spots in the back row. We don’t expect any drop off defensively. The girls realize the tradition here: winning is important – that’s what we do.”

Southport (11-20) – Second-year coach Chelsea Brothers Hoffman joined by sister/assistant coach Bailey Brothers, a 2014 Southport grad … graduated kill leaders in Tiana Wright, 272, and Maddie Davis, 144 … young Cards fell to Perry Meridian in sectional semis … eager to turn experience into a plus this season … savvy back row features juniors in setter Vanessa Miller (145 digs), Nicole Viduarre (team-high 312 digs), Rachel Davis (172 digs), soph Rachel Campbell and senior Kaelyn Hobbs … front line to develop with three-sport junior Lexie Green; most improved player Lauren Cullison (204 kills), middle-blocker Rachel Dean (team-high 51 blocks) and hitter Kylie Gibson … big tests Saturday at Ben Davis Invitational.
Coach’s comments: “We should be improved over last year. Our roster has all but two players who were on varsity last year, so I am super excited about this season. We have three seniors, six juniors and one sophomore. The competition, that’s what is way different this year; there is nothing given. You can see it in the gym and feel it. There is depth and a lot of pieces that give us versatility. We have four good passers. Two girls are battling for libero. We will be a scrappy team. The girls have worked hard on defense and their out-of-system play – making good plays out of bad plays. And that’s where last years’ experience will help us. We are setting the bar higher this year.” |
