Anthony Sims Jr., an Indianapolis light heavyweight, won the 190th fight of his 11-year boxing career with an uppercut knockout of John Thorpe of Alabama at The Pavilion at Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati before 5,000 roaring fans May 29.
Sims, who KO’d Thorpe at the 2:20 mark of the second round, is now 2-0 as a pro. His 11-year amateur record was 188-13. In one of the main events, Aaron Pryor Jr. (20-7), son of the 1976 Indiana Golden Gloves national champ, was on hand to defend his WBC super middleweight crown, but the bout was cancelled. No reason was given. Sims, 19, will see action again in late July, but he’s unlikely to attain his goal of 10 professional wins as a teenage – he turns 20 in February. During his layoff he will work with members of Sims Boxing Gym, which he recently opened at 4615 E. 10th St. |
