Coach’s comment: “We don’t have a replacement for Lauren Fey; she was our spark offensively & defensive MVP. We graduated all three of our outfielders and 90 percent of our home runs. We have pieces to put a solid defense together with a good lineup on offense. Our seniors have a little chip on their shoulders because they have been waiting to get on the varsity field. We know what our young players can do. We will shift from a power game to a small-ball game. Our team goals are to with 20 games and county, conference and sectional championships. Those goals haven’t changed in my 11 years of coaching.”

SOUTHPORT (4A, 10-12) – Graduated 6 seniors, including 2 pitchers … fast on the bases … speedsters, senior centerfielder Erniey Hursey (.408, 29 hits, 26 RBI) and junior shortstop Vanessa Miller (.526, 34 runs, 40 hits, 10 stolen base), put leadoff pressure on foes … solid infield defense with Miller, 1st-basemen soph Johanna Bear & junior Ava Pierle, frosh 2nd-baseman Naomi Chan & 3rdbasemen senior Kendyll Smith and soph Kylie Sloan & outfielders Hursey, senior rightfielder Yasmin McClellan … pitching corps features Bear, Smith, & mound newcomers Maddy Snyder & Shaylee Burgett … lots of plusses with team speed, hitting & fielding.
Coach’s comment: “We have a good mix of returning players and new kids. They have worked hard during the winter and the kids from JV are stepping up. The pitching concerns me because our top pitcher threw only 16 innings, so it will be a committee approach. We have team speed and we can hit the ball with a lot of power in the gaps. Our speed will put a lot of pressure on other teams when we’re on base. Our outfielders can cover a lot of ground. We will be improved in defense and hitting. I like where we’re going. “ |
