The women’s basketball team from Marian University won two games last week to up its winning streak to 15 – the nation’s longest current streak and the third-longest of the year, behind St. Xavier’s 18 and Southern Oregon’s 16.
The Knights (23-3, 14-0 Crossroads League) defeated St. Francis 82-76 Saturday and Bethel 77-71 Feb. 3. Roncalli graduate Kellie Kirkhoff scored 13 points in Saturday’s game. Coach Katie Gearlds, a Beech Grove High alumna, and her team will play its final home games of the season at 1 p.m. the next two Saturdays. The Southside needs to get behind this amazing team and attend one or both of these contests. The men’s team (19-7, 7-7) had a rough week, losing 87-76 to No. 3 St. Francis (Indiana) on Saturday and 89-80 to Bethel on Feb. 2. Ranked as high as No. 13 last month, the Knights close out their regular season with a home game against Grace at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16. The University of Indianapolis’ men’s team (17-4, 11-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) defeated Truman State (Missouri) 87-86 Saturday on a last-second lay-up by Lucas Barker. The Greyhounds also downed Quincy (Ilinois) 98-66 Feb. 4 behind the 13 points of Roncalli graduate Jimmy King. Coach Stan Gouard’s team has four away games before closing out the season at home in a men’s-women’s doubleheader against St. Joseph Feb. 24. The ladies game tips at 5:30 p.m., the men’s at 7:45 p.m. It will be a great chance to see two good games in one evening. The lady Greyhounds (6-17, 4-9) had a tough week as they lost 53-46 to Truman State Saturday and 73-73 in overtime to Quincy Feb. 2. They start a four-game road trip Thursday. |
