For nearly 60 years, Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic School has been a vital part of the Southside. From its beginnings with the Sisters of Providence to being named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U. S. Department of Education, our students continue to develop the tenets of faith, knowledge, and service.
Students attend a weekly all-school Mass. The school fosters spiritual growth through preparation for the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation. Daily prayer, religion classes, participation in Mass, sacraments and special liturgical celebrations provide an environment where students can live their faith everyday.
The school has smaller class sizes (averaging 20 students)than area public schools, and pupils receive individualized attention. Our children have some of the highest ISTEP+ scores of any elementary/middle school in Johnson County and are consistent high achievers in academic, art, religion and music competitions.
Numerous service opportunities give students the chance to experience the joy of giving. Students volunteer at many school and parish functions. We have adopted a “sister parish,” St. Georges, in Bassin-Bleu, Haiti. In addition to our students and families donating thousands of dollars over the past several years to feed and educate 1,200 pupils at St. Georges School, we have helped to build a new school for students nearby. Our pupils are learning about the culture and conditions in Haiti and building relationships based on mutual respect and shared learning.
We invite you and your family to experience the difference and begin the journey with Our Lady of the Greenwood at our Catholic Schools Week open house from 6-7 p.m. Thursday. Tours will be available or may be scheduled daily at your convenience. We hope to meet you soon.
